Slowing Down with Elephants

My week in this program has helped me truly connect with nature. I especially loved the time we spent in the jungle. I tried to soak up every minute—every incredible view of the mountains, trees, and rivers, and every scent of the grass.
I never thought that watching animals could be so calming. There is a unique kind of wisdom and grace in the slow, deliberate movements of the elephants. I would completely lose track of time just observing them.
The data we collected helped me realize how complex elephant communication really is. As a tourist, I might have seen a simple touch as something insignificant, but now I understand how much meaning can be hidden behind it—whether it’s encouragement, an expression of love, or even signs of aggression.
Another thing that really amazed me was the night sky. I don’t remember the last time I saw so many stars. You definitely don’t see a sky like that in the city.
