Five Days, Many Purposes

By Malachy - 1 week intern

Here it is: I loved my week interning at Kindred Spirit. It felt like every moment was filled with purpose. From collecting data to help the elephants in the morning, to teaching English to help the local people in the afternoon, it was an extremely rewarding experience.

Spending 5 days in a row hiking gave me the opportunity to not just see the elephants, but to collect data on and understand the personality of each one individually. It was truly fascinating to learn just how expressive and unique each elephant can be.

The work was enjoyable and not overly demanding. There was plenty of time to relax at my home-stay or in the base camp hammocks. The river is clean and a comfortable temperature for a swim. The staff are super welcoming and I’m so grateful to have met them. The same goes for the locals, it was a joy to play football with the children at the beach and to learn about the Karen culture. I’m so glad that I chose to do this, it passed all of my high expectations.
