Returning to Ban Naklang
By Gemma - 2 week intern
The warm familiarity of arriving into the welcoming hospitality of the village instantly made me feel at home once again.
I promised myself I would return, and I am so grateful I kept that promise. KSES, and the Karen community it works together with, have a created a project built on foundations of true mutual respect. It is a wonderful opportunity to share cultures and experiences, while contributing to the preservation of the elephants.
What struck me most about my visit this time was the resilience of the community in the face of adversity. Instead of retreating after the devastating floods of August 2025, the Karen people have shown true spirit, fighting to rebuild and maintain the life they have here. From sharing coconuts, hiking to the elephants or cooking with your homestay family, you never fail to feel part of something.
There is always a smile to share, a story to tell or friendly "Da Blu" waiting for you here.
Ban Naklang, and KSES, touched my heart three years ago and has since made a permanent mark.
