An unforgettable journey

By Luisa - 1 week intern

Spending five days at Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary felt like stepping into a different rhythm of life — one that is slower, quieter, and deeply grounding.

The village itself is a fascinating place. It is very simple, yet undeniably beautiful. Nothing feels forced or staged. The steady sound of the river nearby is calming and constant, and it quickly becomes part of the background of daily life.

The Karen community plays a central role in what makes this place so special. Their hospitality feels natural and sincere and you immediately feel welcomed not as a visitor, but as a guest.

In the mornings there is no need for an alarm clock here — the roosters take their responsibility seriously and make sure everyone starts the day on time. The village is full of life, with countless dogs and chickens, as well as cats, buffaloes, pigs and cows. Animals are simply part of the landscape, moving through the days alongside people.

The days are sunny and warm, while nights during the cold season can be surprisingly cool, often requiring two blankets.

One of the small daily highlights was Nee’s Corner, run by one of the Karen women. Nee makes the best coconut banana smoothies and a variety of other delicious drinks — a simple but much-appreciated treat after long walks.

Of course, the true highlight of the stay are the elephants. Seeing them after years of hard work and service for humans now finally living their lives in their natural environment is deeply moving. Watching them walk freely, eat at their own pace, and simply exist without expectations is a powerful reminder of what dignity and respect for animals truly look like.

Choosing a favorite elephant was impossible. Each one has such a unique, gentle and lovable personality that comparison feels unnecessary. Together, they form a quiet reminder that individuality exists far beyond humans.

My heartfelt thanks go to Cristina and the entire team at Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary. Their dedication, care and integrity are evident in every detail of this place. Thank you for the incredible work you do, and for making this unforgettable experience possible.

These five days left a lasting impression.
