Overnight Elephant Observations

Interning at Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary, I expected to be able to see our seven elephants once a day on our hikes (which I did!) then return to the village and that was that. What I didn't expect was to be given the privilege to continue watching the elephants at night. When our intern coordinator Lucía gave me the different options for what I wanted to do my project on, I jumped at the opportunity to collect data on our overnight camera traps!

Being able to watch the elephants at night, I was given the rare chance to see them how other guests and some interns don't. I have been able to view how they act and interact with each other when there is nobody watching them, not even a mahout nearby! This allowed me to see each elephant's personality more clearly, and watch as they each follow their own night-time routines.
