More than a lesson
By Ciara - 4 week intern
When I arrived at Kindred Spirit, I expected my favourite memory to be about the elephants, which don’t get me wrong were absolutely incredible! It was a once in a lifetime experience to see them up close almost every day and conduct research on their behaviour and relationships, however the one thing that stood out to me the most didn’t happen out in the jungle, it happened in the village, with a group of children whose positivity and energy always brightened my day.
Every week I took part in what we call ‘Village English’, where the children of the village would gather and be taught basic English words and phrases. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I joined the first lesson, thinking it would just be a typical classroom style exchange. Instead it was much more: games, lots of laughter, and a sense of community.
Some of my favourite lessons were the ones held outside where we would play informative games before bringing out the jump rope and competing with the local kids to see who could jump higher. They would always win, of course!
I originally came here for the elephants but what I found brought me the most joy was the people and how welcoming they were. I will forever remember my time at KSES and all the amazing staff who made this journey the best it could be. Thank you.
