A Lesson in Purpose: Beyond Elephants and Comfort

By Wendy - 2 week intern

Living in a remote environment with limited access to everyday urban comforts, from pharmacies and varied food to effortless transport, requires a level of dedication that truly inspires me.

The leadership and team at KSES carry out their work with an extraordinary blend of love, passion, and genuine joy, fostering deep, meaningful relationships with the local Karen community and demonstrating a profound respect for all animal life and the surrounding forest.

From the moment I arrived, I was struck by their high-trust organizational culture; everyone works with complete autonomy and excellence, projecting warmth, safety, and confidence.

Seeing Cristina lead this crucial project with strength and love, Tilly capture the sanctuary’s true essence to give a voice to the community, Daniela welcome guests with open arms and a refreshing spirit, Lucía guide volunteers so they feel right at home, Kanda bridge communications with passion and human warmth, Rose navigate and protect us safely through the forest with a bright smile, and Nee and the homestay families nourish us with meals and drinks prepared with palpable love, has shown me what real commitment looks like.

My experience as a volunteer has completely exceeded my expectations and reshaped my perspective on life. Beyond their daily tasks, these remarkable individuals embody a living example of selfless service, resilience, and cultural respect, teaching me that true value comes from giving oneself whole-heartedly to a purpose without ego or conditions.

They embrace a simple, meaningful way of living, working joyfully for the well-being of others, the animals, and the land, without expecting anything in return.

I feel I still have so much to learn from their humility, courage, and unconditional dedication. I leave with a heart full of gratitude for KSES, wishing with all my heart that their vital work continues to thrive and inspire people across the world, where so many communities and animals need this kind of light and protection.

With deep gratitude,

Wendy Portillo
